Authentication vs Ownership.
The four layers most people collapse into one, and where NOANE fits.
Direct Answer
The hierarchy.
Authentication proves what an asset is. Tracking shows where an asset is. Custody proves who controls it and who can transfer it. Ownership is the state cryptographic custody produces. NOANE fits between physical assets and digital records by verifying custody before ownership-state advancement.
Comparison
Four concepts. Four questions.
| Concept | Question answered | What it proves | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Authentication | What is it? | The asset appears genuine. | Who controls it. Who can transfer it. |
| Tracking | Where is it? | Location or path traveled. | Authority to transfer. Validity of the record. |
| Custody | Who controls it? | Active control and authority to transfer. | Past ownership history beyond the record. |
| Ownership | Whose is it? | The recorded state produced by verified custody. | Physical presence by itself. |
Why Authentication Alone Is Not Enough
A genuine object is not a controlled object.
Authentication can confirm whether an object appears genuine, but it does not prove who controls the asset, who can transfer it, or whether a custody record should advance. A counterfeit detector tells you the watch is real. It does not tell you the person handing it to an agent is allowed to sell it.
Where NOANE Fits
The custody layer.
NOANE is the cryptographic custody layer. It uses hardware-anchored proof and dual-key transfer to verify custody before ownership-state advancement. See also Agentic Commerce and Physical Goods, the Glossary, and the Citation Kit.
FAQ
Frequently asked.
What is the difference between authentication and ownership?
Authentication proves what an asset is or whether it appears genuine. Ownership is the recorded state that says who currently holds the asset and who can transfer it.
What is the difference between custody and tracking?
Tracking shows where an asset is or has been. Custody proves who actively controls it and who is authorized to transfer it.
Why is custody important for physical goods?
Physical goods can be authenticated and tracked but still be transferred by an unauthorized party. Custody is the layer that prevents records from advancing on weak proof.
Where does NOANE fit?
NOANE is the cryptographic custody layer. It uses hardware-anchored proof and dual-key transfer to verify custody before ownership-state advancement.
Does NOANE replace authentication?
No. Authentication and NOANE custody are complementary. Authentication proves what an asset is. NOANE proves who controls it and who can transfer it.
